AFFILIATE ARTIST

Amy Ruth

My mum tells me that I was practically born with a pencil in my hand.

My passion for drawing and art led me to a professional career in urban design and landscape architecture—but as I progressed in my career, the pencil was traded in for a computer. I found myself missing the freedom and creativity of making art by hand.

So in early 2024, I picked up a paintbrush and a pen again and started Vibrant Places Art—a return to the joyful, imaginative practice that first sparked my love of place and design.

My paintings are vibrant, bold, and eye-catching. I love using bright colours that evoke delight and energy. I paint imaginative urban environments, lush gardens, layered landscapes, and the wild beauty of mountains and subtropical flora. My work often features character homes and architectural forms that blend the built and natural world.

With my background in landscape architecture and urban design, my passion for placemaking continues to shape how I see the world—and how I paint it.

I aim to create a vivid and aspirational “sense of place,” where colour, memory, and environment converge in harmony.

Most of my inspiration comes from my life in South-East Queensland, where suburban streetscapes, subtropical plants, and big skies provide endless creative fuel.

My work explores the layered and evolving landscapes of suburban Australia—particularly those of South-East Queensland—through a lens of colour, memory, and imagination.

With a background in landscape architecture and urban design, I’m deeply interested in how places are shaped, transformed, and remembered.

Each painting is a celebration of place: whether it’s a winding garden path, a weatherboard Queenslander, or a tangle of native flora. I use vibrant, high-contrast colour palettes and simplified, expressive forms to create scenes that feel both familiar and dreamlike.

There’s often a sense of joy and nostalgia in my work—bright tones, rhythmic patterns, and playful architecture that evoke the feeling of being at home in nature or finding magic in the everyday. Underlying this, I’m also exploring deeper ideas about time, place, and identity—how geology, ecology, and the built environment all leave visible traces in the suburban landscape.

While my style is bold and abstracted, each work is carefully layered and composed, drawing from real places, memories, and the emotional textures of lived experience.

Ultimately, I want my paintings to feel like places you want to step into—vivid spaces of possibility, grounded in the familiar but blooming with imagination.
